2026-02-21 Camping at City of the Rocks, NM

After a great time with Jacquie and Dan in Surprise, we headed back east to Texas for our next house sit. At Jacquie’s suggestion, our next stop for the night was at the City of Rocks in New Mexico. It is just south of Silver City, which is a small western town that we have on our list of places to explore next time we’re out west.

We have had some issues making online reservations at parks–and this was one of them. In this case, we decided to go into the park and locate a site we liked and then make the online reservation. However, the sites that appeared to be open (in person) were already booked when we looked online. After wasting an hour looking around unsuccessfully, it began to grow dark and we decided to check with the camp host.

To our surprise, the camp host was a very friendly and thoughtful fellow who hails from Stevens Point, WI. He lead us to a couple of sites that are first-come-first-serve, but neither of them worked for our camper. Consequently, we ended up in a spot in the RV section. We were fine with that, since it provided an electrical hookup and it was dark by them time we set up.

The park itself is stunning and unique. It is situated among a group of large stone formations that sit out in the middle of a flat desert-like area. It’s quite other-worldly. We didn’t get to explore the hiking trails or see much of the park, but we saw enough to know that we’ll return one day and stay for a few days in a site out among the stones rather than the RV section.
