2025-11-11 Camping at Red Rock Springs, Iowa

For the first time, we took our camper and camped on the way to a house sit. We were scheduled to house sit in Tulsa, OK for some folks for whom we’ve house/pet sat before on a couple of occasions. I was particularly looking forward to this one — they have three new kittens (plus two older cats and a dog.)

Our first day on the road, we stopped in Iowa. We used the HipCamp app to locate a really nice campsite on a guy’s private land. The site is called “Owl’s Perch” and it’s in Red Rock Springs, just southeast of Des Moines.

We loved this very private and roomy campsite! It was a single site in the woods–no neighbors, no barking dogs…just us. We heard owls, cranes, and coyotes, and we saw geese and trumpeter swans fly overhead. The stars were amazing!

We also found the solar lighted bathroom with the composting toilet to be quite a luxury for boondocking.

It got pretty cold that night–just below freezing. But, we toughed it out and found that our power stations could easily keep two electric blankets warm for the night! It was cold making coffee in the morning. But, that coffee was hot and delicious. We packed up and left before 9 a.m. It was a long drive to the next campsite.
