Equipment

  • 1 Instant Pot

Ingredients

  • 1 lb dried split peas rinsed and sorted
  • 3 cup ham cubed and/or or a ham bone
  • 3 T butter
  • 1 onion small, diced
  • 1 cup celery diced
  • 1 cup carrot diced or shredded
  • 8 cup chicken broth
  • 1 t salt
  • 1/2 t black pepper
  • 1/2 t thyme if fresh, then chopped
  • 1 t rosemary if fresh, then chopped
  • 2 bay leaf
  • 4 clv garlic minced

Instructions

  • Turn Instant Pot on Saute and melt butter. Brown ham, if it’s cubed, and then cook onion and garlic for a couple of minutes.
  • Add carrot and celery, rosemary, thyme, salt, and pepper and cook for another 5 minutes.
  • Add the peas, broth, and bay leaves (and ham bone if applicable) and close the lid.
  • Set on PRESSURE and set timer for 15 minutes. Then allow natural pressure release for another 15 minutes.
  • If using ham bone, remove the bone and return shredded meat to the pot.

Notes

This is a great way to use up leftover ham. You may find that NOT using a ham bone makes for a slightly less flavorful soup, but it’s still very tasty. The recipe doesn’t call for much salt, so depending on the ham it may need to be salted to taste when served.
